Tonkhil  is a sum (district) of Govi-Altai Aimag (province) in western Mongolia. Founded in 1924. Distance from Ulaanbaatar to Ulaanbaatar city, 202 km from Gobi-Altai aimag center. In the soum there are mountains of Sami khairkhan, "Hegeel", "Khaanat", "Shiree", "Bambagar Yamaat", and "Mountains", "Mongol-Altai mountain ranges". The southern part is the Khonin Uul Govi, and the Gobi has rare and endangered species such as wild ass, black tailed gazelles and wild horses. The Baikal region has three zones: Gobi Desert, Steppe and High Mountain. Basin, Horny, Sweet, lakes, species, Khujirt and Khul river. In the west there is Darvi in Khovd aimag, in the north with Bugat, Tugrug and Darvi soums in the east and in front of China.
