Sukhbaatar is the capital of Selenge Province in northern Mongolia, on the Orkhon river. It was founded in 1924 as Javkhlant Sharga and settled in Dornod, concentrated in the place "Suvargan Gobi". In 1943, the Resolution of the Presidium of the State Conference named after Sukhbaatar as the name of the great majority.

Eastern part of Sukhbaatar province: 610 km from Ulaanbaatar, 170 km from Dornod province, 54 km from province center. Border with Erdenetsagaan, Asgat, Halzan, Uulbayan, Munkhaan and Tumentsogt sums of Sukhbaatar province, Buryat sum, Dornod province, Khulunbuir, Bulgan and Matad soums.
Sukhbaatar sum has a territory of 1.3 million hectares in steppe zone. It has a population of 3.2 thousand.
