The Independence Obelisk was unveiled in 2011, “the year of four great anniversaries of Mongolian statehood”: the 2220th anniversary of Hunnu Empire, the first Mongolian state (209 BCE), the 805th anniversary of the Great Mongolian Empire (1206), the centennial of the National Liberation Revolution and declarartion of Mongolia’s independence (1911) and the 90th anniversary of the People’s Revolution (1921). Featuring the stylizised image of the Nine White Standards of Mongolian statehood, fortress wall symbolizing strength of the nation, the “lightened tower” in the form of arrowhead epitomizing the heritage passing down to posterity.
