Dundgobi Tsagaan-suvarga Nomad Family
About this place
Introduction to Tsagaan Suvarga – The White Stupa of Mongolia
Tsagaan Suvarga, also known as the “White Stupa,” is a breathtaking natural formation located in Dundgobi province, southern Mongolia. Rising up to 30 meters high and stretching for more than 400 meters, these ancient limestone and clay cliffs have been eroded over millions of years by wind and water, creating stunning stupa-like shapes that gave the site its name.
The cliffs change color beautifully with the light of day, shifting from white and yellow to pink and orange during sunrise and sunset. Visitors often compare the dramatic landscape to a giant natural amphitheater or a scene from another planet.
Tsagaan Suvarga is also of great geological and paleontological interest. Fossilized remains of ancient sea creatures can be found here, reminding travelers that this desert-like land was once covered by a prehistoric ocean.
For adventurers, the area is perfect for hiking, photography, and exploring the vast Gobi steppe. Many travelers combine their visit with an overnight stay in a ger camp or with local nomadic families nearby, where they can experience traditional Mongolian hospitality and culture.
As one of the highlights of Dundgobi province, Tsagaan Suvarga offers an unforgettable glimpse into Mongolia’s natural wonders, blending dramatic scenery with the timeless lifestyle of the Gobi’s nomadic people.
