About this place

Introduction to Ongi Valley – Dundgobi Province

Ongi Valley, located in Dundgobi province, central Mongolia, is a beautiful and historically significant area known for its serene landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The valley stretches along the Ongi River and is surrounded by rolling hills, steppe, and semi-desert terrain, offering visitors a peaceful escape into Mongolia’s natural beauty.

The area is famous for the ruins of Ongi Monastery, which was one of Mongolia’s largest monasteries before its destruction in the 1930s. Today, travelers can explore the remaining structures, stone carvings, and historical sites while learning about Mongolia’s Buddhist heritage. The valley is also ideal for hiking, photography, and enjoying the quiet countryside.

Ongi Valley provides a unique opportunity to experience nomadic life. Visitors can stay in traditional gers, interact with local herding families, taste fresh dairy products, and learn about daily life in central Mongolia. The combination of cultural history, nomadic traditions, and natural beauty makes Ongi Valley a memorable destination for travelers seeking both adventure and cultural immersion.
